Cat and Kitten Vaccinations

Vaccinations are a crucial part of preventative healthcare for cats and kittens. Just like humans, cats are susceptible to a variety of infectious diseases that can cause serious illness and even be fatal. At Wooded Acres Animal Hospital in Middle Island, NY, we provide vaccines to prevent your feline from these diseases and keep him or her healthy.

Understanding Vaccinations

Vaccinations, also known as immunizations, work by exposing your cat's immune system to a weakened or inactive form of a virus or bacteria. This allows their body to develop immunity to the disease without experiencing the full effects of an infection.

Recommended Vaccinations for Cats

There are a certain core and non-core vaccinations that all cats require. Some of these vaccinations include:

Core Vaccinations

•           FVRCP: This combination vaccine protects against feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, and panleukopenia (feline distemper). These diseases are highly contagious and potentially fatal.

•           Rabies: Rabies is a deadly virus that can be transmitted to humans through bites or scratches. Vaccination against rabies is required by law in most states.

Non-Core Vaccinations

•           Feline Leukemia (FeLV): This virus weakens a cat's immune system and can lead to various illnesses. The FeLV vaccine is recommended for cats that go outdoors or have contact with other cats whose FeLV status is unknown.

Kitten Vaccination Schedule

Kittens typically begin their vaccination series between 6 and 8 weeks of age. They will receive booster shots every 3-4 weeks until they are around 16 weeks old. At this point, they will also receive their first rabies vaccination.

Vaccinations for Adult Cats

Adult cats usually receive booster vaccinations for core vaccines every 1-3 years, depending on their lifestyle and our veterinarians’ recommendation. Non-core vaccines, like FeLV, may also be recommended on a case-by-case basis.

Improving Your Pet’s Health

Vaccinations are one of the most effective ways to protect your cat from preventable diseases. Regular veterinary care, including annual checkups and parasite prevention, is also essential for your cat's long-term health and well-being.
